This hummingbird nest was found on one of the trails in San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, near the Nature Center, and shows a female Anna’s hard at work ensuring the survival of her species. Fourteen different hummingbird species have been recorded in the state of California.

Moorten Botanical Garden exhibits over 3000 desert plants from around the world and was founded in 1938 by Patricia and Chester “Cactus Slim” Moorten (who was one of silent film’s original Keystone Cops). You can also buy plants from their nursery.

With the profits from Snow White, Walt Disney made a deposit on 51 acres of land in Burbank, which the Walt Disney Studios still occupies today. I love this building which features the Seven Dwarfs holding up the roof! Looks like to me that Dopey got the toughest assignment!

This pic was taken from the Idyllwild Nature Center viewpoint and features both Lily Rock (8,000 feet) and Tahquitz Peak (8,828 feet). Lily Rock (also known as Tahquitz Rock) was named in 1898, either for its “lily-white” appearance or in honor of Lily Eastman, and has been a popular free-climbing destination since the 1930’s. Tahquitz gets its name from a demon in Soboda Indian legend.

This pic shows one of the two “vertical gardens” at the Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge/Glendale. The gallery was created by restoring Manchester Boddy’s original garage and adding this contemporary building.

This pic of the Coachella Valley was taken at around 8,500 feet up Mt. San Jacinto, from the outdoor observation deck of the Palm Springs Tramway station.

This pic looks out from a small cave on the side of the road leading to the Sacatone Overlook in the McCain Valley Resource Conservation Area, which is off I8 just north of Boulevard, CA.

I’ve been saving this pic of the beautiful flag which is in The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, at the corner of Palomar Airport Road and Armada Drive, for just the right day and this is it! Happy 4th everyone!

The Gene Autry Museum of the American West is located in Griffith Park in Los Angeles just across the street from the Los Angeles Zoo. This statue of Gene and his faithful horse Champion is in the open-air courtyard of the museum complex just outside the Wells Fargo Theater. Mr. Autry passed away in 1998 at the age of 91.
